Business Etiquette and Service Excellence (BeSe) is a module that all Leisure and Resort Management (LRM) and Culinary and Catering Management (CCM) students take during the 2.2 sem. Throughout this module, we will be taught about the type of business etiquette like dress code, how to react during business setting and basic make up. As for service excellence, videos of the type of and correct service have been shown to us during lecture. Beside these, there are many other topic have been teach to us which i will talk about it and how they will benefit me in future later.
I felt that this module is extremely useful when we start our Internship Programme as well as when we go out of the society, as the things that we learned are able to be apply. Especially during Internship, as this is the first time we stepped into the society, there is a lot of things that we don’t know. Therefore, it serves as a platform where we can prepare ourselves. BeSe is different from the other modules we learnt, as we normally learn the theory of a certain field. Whereas, in BeSe, the things we learnt are the interpersonal skills and how to interact with others, these skills are not able to learn from the other module.
To me the most memorable topics are the makeup session with shiseido, professional Presence and Corporate Politics. As I think that it will make a biggest impact in my future when I start working and internship. These topics enable me to have a better understanding of the business etiquette.
Professional Presence
During Professional Presence lesson, we are taught about the appropriate dress code and how to we behave and what we should do during business occasions. I felt that this is very useful as it is something that we don’t normally practise during our daily life.
Through the lessons, we are able to learn the proper meeting and greeting manner when we meet the potential clients. We also got to practise the appropriate behaviours like the way to receive and present namecard and what are the small talk’s topics we can use during business. This will help us in the future when we are networking in the industry, after learning BeSe, I am able to communicate with strangers and the correct way to approach them.
After I learnt the appropriate dress code, I start to become more observance in the people dressing formally. This could help me to take note on my dressing as well as the peers, it could also aids me in preparing my subordinate before meeting the clients. I had also have a better understanding on the dress code during different occasions for example what should I wear during a cocktail reception and what are the difference between smart causal and business causal. This will help me to better prepare myself when I go to work or meet the potential clients.
I had also applied what I had learned to my internship interview with the corporate world, I believe that the company will be impressed by my effort and thus hire me as their staff.
Email and telephone etiquette is also very important in the business setting as it is another way to connect with the clients. Thus by learning the etiquette, we know the appropriate ways in dealing the clients or business partners through phone and email. Besides, business partners, email and phone etiquette could also apply in our daily life such as writing a compliment email to a company or calling a friend, it is something that we have to learn to prepare us to communicate with others.
Makeup Session
I am glad that the school invited Shiseido to the conduct a workshop for every one of us as it could better prepare us to present ourselves to others regardless industry partners, colleagues or strangers. In which, the makeup skills and personal hygiene is very useful in term of business etiquette. As ‘us’ being the representative of the company, potential clients will be judging the company through our behaviour and presentation. Thus, if someone was unable to present themselves well, the potential clients might think that the company are unable to train their staff and leave a bad impression.
We could also prepare our future subordinates before meeting our clients, therefore it does not only benefit the ladies, and guys are able to have a better knowledge on the presentation of their subordinate.
Corporate Politics
In this topic, we learned what are the corporate politics and the ways to avoid them. After sitting through the 2 ½ hours of workshop, I am able to know the different type of politics. Tutor talks about the type of politics and her personal experience as well as the politics she had seen. After hearing the difference real life experience, I am amazed by the difference politics that could happen in the real life.
Therefore, after the workshop, I am able to know the possible politics that I might meet during my internship and when I start working. Being able to know, it could help me to avoid or solve the politics that might happen and thus are able to react to the situation. By identifying the politics that might happen in the corporate world, it also helped us to react by knowing the dos and the don’ts when working.
However, being corporate politics, some of it will have to be experience by ourselves to know more about the politics and will be able to react better in the future.
Therefore, I think that BeSe had helped my classmates and me in preparing ourselves to face the corporate world regardless as an internship students or a working adult. Being able to apply whatever we had learned during the module, I believe that we could become more outstanding than the rest of the competitors and impression our future partners. Besides the above mention topics, I believed that the rest of the topics are able to apply in the future. I am really glad that I am able to have this module and this have allow me to know more about the corporate world and the possible challangers I might meet in the future.
